Rev. Paul Jones “I Won’t Complain”

Rev. Paul Jones (1960-1990) was the founding Pastor of New Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, TX. Rev. Jones was a dynamic preacher and singer whose life was cut short at the youthful age of 30 when he was murdered at his home in the Houston area in 1990. Also, Rev. Paul Jones is a lot of time credited with writing this song but Bishop William C. Abney originally wrote, “I won’t complain”.

Dear Church Enthusiast. Thank you so much for your blog. I truly appreciate your showing the videos for "I Won't Complain" with the proper credit going to Bishop Abney, as well as placing the urls for the videos. I'm completing a book on 21st Century Christianity and thanks to the information you shared, I have some even richer content. I didn't realize that Rev Paul Jones had died under those circumstances either so, thanks again, and please keep up the great works! Blessings and God Speed to you, Jo Lena Johnson.

The orginal called I can't complain was written by a white country gospel singer back in the 70's. The first gospel rendition of the song was recorded by James Lenox of Chicago in 1982 (called God has been so good to me). Rev Jones and Bishop Abney popularized and took the song to a great level. All of the versions are awesome. It is just a great song.

I concur with Anonymous, a white country gospel singer and pastor indeed wrote I Won't Complain. His name is Bishop Don Johnson from Memphis. He is still living, though up in years now.

The gentleman who wrote "I can't complain" was the Rev Don Johnson from Memphis TN. Sadly Br Johnson passed away this past Tuesday. Br Johnson wrote many songs however "I can't complain" will always be my favorite.

I've noticed that many attribute the writing of this song to the late Rev Paul Jones, but in truth, he was not the author of the song “I Won't Complain”. Rather, this great gospel song was actually written in 1974 by the late Rev. Don Johnson from Nashville, Tennesse, an ALJC pastor. The correct title to the song is actually “I Can’t Complain”, but has been changed over time. Very few words have been changed to the Rev. Johnson’s song for the version, ” I Won’t Complain”. Please go to You Tube to view Rev. Don Johnson himself singing this beautiful original song, “I Can’t Complain" @ http://youtu.be/p4ZH2YAB77c

hi,
I was just introduced to the song,
"I Won't Complain".. when looking up the composer, some gave the credit to Rev. johnson, some to V. Micheal Mckay and yet others to Bishop William C. Abney...
I do believe Bishop Abney to be the true writer.
Whoever wrote it, I'm just thankful for the song!

I grew up in the 1970's in Canada with Rev Don Johnson from Memphis, TN coming to our church and singing a song he wrote, "I Can't Complain". It was one our favorites. Everyone who has been around Rev. Johnson and the songs he has written knows the song originated through his burden and anointing, and it would be wrong to accredit it to others who deceitfully lay claim to it.

Rev. Paul Jones stole this song and was being sued by the original author at the time of his death in 1990. The original songwriter was Rev. Don Johnson, an ALJC Pastor from Memphis Tennessee. It was written and copyrighted in 1974. Anyone else claiming authorship is a fraud. It has been adopted by the black church as a hymn and many think that one of theirs wrote it but such is not true. It is a beautiful song and should be enjoyed by all but true authorship should be noted.

what does it matter if the original writer of the song was a white man? who cares if he was white, black, green ,blue or any color. Why does everyone have to make it about race and skin color? We all have one Creator and we were made in his image. The song is for the purpose of teaching people not to complain even when things don't go their way. But instead praise God in the good and the bad times. Give God the praise the glory and honor if He blesses or doesn't the point being that you should not complain. But instead trust in God and do good. Dwell in the land and feed off his faithfulness.

Bishop Don Howard Johnson wrote this song back in 1974. He pastored Church of the Lord Jesus Christ on Grey Rd. in Memphis, TN for many years and was the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ for 22 years. He scribbled the lyrics of I Can’t Complain on a brown paper bag while driving back to Memphis with his son Charles and his wife Jean after visiting his wife’s oldest sister Faye in an old people’s home. Faye had a hard life and Sis. Jean always took pity on her & visited her often. Bishop Johnson realized how blessed he was on his way back to Memphis and wrote the lyrics to this song. I know that for a fact. He was a poor boy from Mississippi who gained his education by studying the bible. He ended up ministering all over the world, meeting with two presidents in the white house and writing many beloved songs that we still sing today. He was the greatest man I ever knew and I’m getting teary eyed just writing this thinking about him. He loved the Lord with all of his heart and his family of 3 children (David, Charles & Karen) and 7 grand children (Charles, Mark, Aimee, Kelli, Joshua, Jonathan & Carmen).

He didn’t write the song. In a video he says he heard it sang at a funeral and wanted to sing it as his testimony

Where do you have the proof of this video you claim ??? Don Johnson took Paul Jones to court and Paul joined died before the court date. Don Hohnson wrote the song and it was hijacked by Paul Jones or this Abner. They changed one word Can’t to Won’t and added a verse and claimed they wrote it. The black community are still arguing over who wrote it they don’t even know which person actually wrote it and they are all wrong. Neither Jones nor Abner wrote this song. It’s Don Johnson a pastor from Memphis tn an Apostolic oneness Pentecostal white man who wrote it the lyric came after leaving a funeral of his wife’s family there was a horse fire and the father & mother & all the children burned alive in a fire and on the way home from this funeral the words came to him after asking god how something like this could happen and starting to cry he had to pull over and write the lyrics on the side of the highway. When he was done writing he starts driving back home.
